Two color varieties occur that are primarily related to sex: a largely dark brownish male variety with numerous small white spots and lines and a pale (whitish) variety with red to orange blotches and an orange throat region; both varieties have a large black-ringed dark brown mark covering most of gill cover and many small white spots on the head. Size: attains 6 cm. Inhabits empty worm and mollusc tubes on rocky reefs. Depth: 1-60 m. The Gulf of California, except in the extreme north. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
