ACANTHURUS
SURGEONFISHES, TANGS
Body an elongate oval; teeth on jaws fixed, with flattened, notched tips, 8-28 on each jaw; dorsal fin usually with IX spines, not very high; pelvic fin I, 5; a single depressible spine on the side of the base of the tail.
A circumtropical genus with about 40 species; 4 non-endemic species occur in our area, including 2 widespread Indo-Pacific species and 2 Pacific species.
