Overview
Main identification features
  • no fatty eyelid
  • yellowish + dark scale edges
  • juvenile - dark tail spot
  • both lips thick
  • teeth not on lips
  • scales rough
Body robust; space between eyes distinctly convex; no fatty eyelid; teeth strong, imbedded in jawbones; lips thick, without fleshy knob at tip of lower lips; 16-23 rakers on lower limb of 1st gill arch; origin of 1st dorsal nearer snout than tail base; anal with 2 spines, 10 rays; scales very rough.

Olive above, white below, design of dark crisscrossed lines on back; fins yellowish; a dark blotch on tail base; upper 1/3 of pectoral base dark; juveniles with distinct spot on tail.

Adults in freshwater, but entering sea to spawn, where larvae develop.

Size: to 36 cm.

Habitat: adults in rivers, juveniles at river mouths.

Depth: 0-5 m.

A new world, tropical to warm temperate species; in our region it occurs from the lower Gulf of California to northern Peru, the Galapagos and Cocos Islands.
