Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays VII (embedded and not visible in adults) + I,18-22; anal rays II + I,18-20; gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 4-6 + 12-17; lateral line with a pronounced, moderately long arch anteriorly; straight part of lateral line with 12-30 scutes an tail base; body superficially scaleless (scales actually minute and embedded where present); readily distinguished by its highly compressed boy, steep angular forehead, and juveniles with extremely long and filamentous anterior dorsal and anal fin rays.

Silvery with light metallic bluish tinge dorsally; a small dark diffuse spot on upper end of gill opening; juveniles with 5 chevron-shaped bars on body.

Maximum size to 150 cm; at least 22.7 kg.

Habitat: adults solitary in coastal seas, young usually pelagic and drifting.

Depth: 0-100 m.

Worldwide in tropical seas; southern Baja and the SW and SE Gulf of California to Peru, the Revillagigedos, Galapagos, Cocos and Malpelo.
