Overview
Main identification features
  • dense brown spots, forming stripes at rear
  • pectoral: 5-6 dark bars
Dorsal rays XI,18-20; anal rays III,9; pectoral rays 17-19; rakers on first gill arch 20-23; rear margin of preopercle serrate; a single strong, forward pointing spine on lower rear corner of preopercle.

Generally brown with dense covering of dark brown spots, coalesced to form stripes on rear of body; pectoral fins yellowish with 5-6 dark brown bars.

Size: grows to about 25 cm.

Inhabits tidepools, rocky reefs, and adjacent sand patches.

Depth: 1-30 m.

Southern Baja and NE Gulf of California to Peru, Cocos and Malpelo.
