FOUR-EYES
Elongate, compressed; head pointed at front in side view; eyes elevated on top of head and divided longitudinally giving two pupils in each eye; pelvic fins on abdomen distinctly behind tips of pectorals; dorsal fin (7-10 rays) well behind anal fin, at rear of body on base of tail; fertilization is internal, male sex organ is formed by first three anal fin rays; 50-96 lateral scales.
The genus, which is restricted to the Neotropical region, has three species. One species occurs in freshwater and mangroves at the mouths of rivers in Central America.
