Overview
Main identification features
  • snout prominent, pointed
  • back blue; tail yellow
  • tip of dorsal fin and rear border tail fin black
  • top jaw reaches gill opening
  • pectoral reaches pelvic

Dorsal rays 15; anal with long base, rays 34-40, origin ~under center of dorsal fin; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 12-19; snout relatively prominent, pointed; upper jaw elongate, reaching to edge of gill cover, its rear tip pointed; a few short gill rakers prersent on posterior surface of third gill arch; a small triangular projection on lower margin of gill cover (on suboperculum); pectoral fin reaching beyond pelvic fin origin.

Bluish on back, silvery below; small specimens with silver midlateral stripe that disappears with age; caudal fin yellow.

Size: to 26 cm.

Habitat: coastal pelagic.

Depth: 0-55 m.

The only anchovy known from both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of the Americas; Guatemala to Ecuador.
