Overview
Main identification features
  • deep body; medium snout

Body moderately deep, about 25% of standard length, compressed; snout medium length, medium point; top jaw long, to edge of gill opening, sharp point; no large canine teeth; membrane between gill covers not expanded at rear; third gill arch with rakers; 17-22 rakers on lower limb of first gill arch; dorsal fin origin in mid-body; anal fin base long, 23-32 rays, origin under or just behind origin of dorsal fin; pectoral broad and long, passing pelvic base

Silver stripe along flank broad, ~ eye diameter wide; tail with a black border, often orange center.

Size: 14.5 cm.

Habitat: marine, coastal pelagic, dirty water around bays and river mouths, enters rivers.

Depth: 0-50 m.

The tip of Baja and the NW and E Gulf of California to Ecuador.
