ANCHOVIES
Moderate sized, strongly compressed fishes; snout pointed; top jaw relatively short, at most extending a little onto preoperculum; gill rakers fine and slender, >45 on 1st gill arch, none on rear face of 3rd arch; gill membrane not joined across under gills; dorsal fin origin at about midbody; anal fin base long (20-29 rays), origin under front to middle of dorsal.
A new world genus, with three species that occurs on eastern Pacific and western Atlantic, one of which is endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
