Overview
Main identification features
  • brown + 3 large ocelli
  • pelvics: eye side fin long
Body deep, height ~54% of standard length; eyes on left side; mouth long, ~38% of head length, ends under middle lower eye; 7-9 short, fat rakers on first gill arch; dorsal 76-84 rays, origin over front edge top eye; pelvics in symmetric position on belly, eye-side fin very long (>2X fin on blind side); lateral line strongly arched over pectoral fin, extending onto head with branches behind upper eye and under lower eye; urinary papilla on eye-side; scales on both sides of body very rough, lateral line with 86-90 scales.

Eye-side body and fins uniform dark brown; 3 large ocelli on body, a pair on midbody on the upper and lower flanks, the 3rd just before caudal peduncle, each consisting of a large round black spot surrounded by a thin yellow ring and with 1-2 small white central spots.

Size: 35 cm.

Habitat: muddy-sand bottoms.

Depth: 7-100 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, and Malpelo.
