Andrena vicinoides is the first of a series of species which are superficially similar, especially in vestitural color; These species often occur together in the field and cannot be easily distinguished, unless by habits which are largely unknown; They are frequently difficult to distinguish in the laboratory with adequate equipment because of intraspecific variation, modification of characters due to parasites (Stylops sp.), or difficulties in viewing certain characteristics.

Andrena vicinoides is a moderate-sized western species occurring most abundantly in montane habitats; Both sexes are marked by the mandibles having basal inferior angles or teeth (quite small in the female sex, small to large in males), dark tergal vestiture at least on terga 3-5, dull mesoscutum and scutellum, and pale thoracic vestiture; The female has a rounded clypeus with the impunctate midline often indistinct, dark scopal hairs, a pointed pygidial plate, and bidentate labral process with a transverse groove at the base; The male has a shiny, somewhat flattened clypeus usually without an impunctate midline, usually dark leg hairs, sternum 6 sharply reflexed apically, and flagellar segment 1 about as long as segment 2.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 11-13 mm; width, 3-4 mm; wing length, M = 4.99 ± 0.225 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.94 ± 0.006; FOVL/ FOVW, M = 3.09 ± 0.020.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third to half rufescent; flagellar segments 2 or 3 to 10 dark reddish-brown to brown below; tegula translucent rufescent at summit, piceous anteriorly; wing membranes moderately infumate, veins black to dark brown; distitarsi dark rufescent; tibial spurs blackish-brown to rufescent; terga 2-5 with apical areas often slightly translucent, rufescent, to dark brown; sterna 2-5 usually rufescent in part.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals first three flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 equal in length to following two segments or slightly shorter; segment 2 about as long as segment 3, slightly shorter than segment 4, about as long as greatest width; Eyes each about three and three-fourths times as long as broad, inner margins parallel; Mandible short, when closed outer mandible extends beyond midlabrum by one-fifth to one-fourth its own length, with distinct inferior basal angle or tooth which is often rounded; Malar space short, minimum length equal to one-fourth basal mandibular width or less; Galea as m frigida but often moderately shiny especially near base; Maxillary palpal segments as in frigida but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.7:0.7; Labral process large, squarish or trapezoidal, bidentate, apex reflexed with transverse shiny depressed area at base; labrum below process convex, with median crista, dull; Clypeus evenly rounded from side to side, with moderately coarse round punctures separated by half to one puncture width, often with narrow impunctate midline but usually not complete to base and occasionally expanded apically, surface shiny apicomedially to dulled by fine shagreening in basal third and laterally; Supraclypeal area dulled by minute, irregular punctures and fine shagreening; Face above antennal fossae with moderately coarse longitudinal rugulae and indistinct interrugal punctures; Facial fovea as in frigida but separated from lateral ocellus by half to three-fourths an ocellar diameter; Vertex above lateral ocellus equal to one ocellar diameter, rarely slightly more, occasionally less, dulled by fine tessellation and scattered punctures; Genal area broad, in profile equal to one and one-half width of eye, surface shiny near eye to moderately shiny, shagreened posteriorly, with minute scattered punctures.

Pronotum with distinct humeral angle and ridge, dulled by fine tessellation; Mesoscutum opaque, dulled by fine regular tessellation, punctures obscure; Scutellum similar; Metanotum like mesoscutum but punctures more evident, crowded; Propodeum with dorsal enclosure evenly tessellate, with obscure irregular roughening at extreme base if at all, rarely roughened medially; dorsolateral and posterior surfaces tessellate with indistinct shallow punctures; lateral surface moderately shiny, coarsely tessellate; Mesepisternum dulled by regular tessellation, shallow punctures obscured by tessellation

Metasomal tergum 1 dulled by fine dense tessellation, punctures small, obscure; Terga 2-4 with basal areas with small round punctures separated by half to two or more puncture widths, surface moderately dulled by fine reticular shagreening; apical areas similar but punctures smaller and shagreening often more distinct; Tergum 2 with apical area medially less than half as long as basal area; Pygidial plate V-shaped, apex pointed unless worn, internal raised triangle present; Sterna 2-5 with apical areas impunctate, surfaces dulled by reticular shagreening; basal areas with punctures crowded towards apical areas, sparse basally, reticular shagreening present but moderately shiny.

VESTITURE. — Rarely entirely black or dark brown; usually black except as follows: pale specimens with head with ochraceous hairs on clypeus, supraclypeal area and face except along inner margins of eyes and vertex; dorsum of thorax cinereous, ochraceous to fox-red (rarely), mesepisterna with some pale hair dorsally in palest specimens; tergum 1 often with pale ochraceous hairs basally (entirely black in dark forms), occasionally terga 1 and 2 with pale hairs and rarely a few pale hairs basomedially on tergum 3; tergal hairs long, abundant, erect to suberect; pale specimens with hind femora with ochraceous to pale brown hairs and scopal hairs brown; Scopal hairs long, simple, dark; trochanteral flocculus complete, brown to black; propodeal corbiculum complete anteriorly (unless worn) with few to several long internal hairs dorsally, dark in color.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 9-12 mm; width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 4.26 ± 0.322 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.92 ± 0.005; FS1/FS2, M = 1.02 ± 0.023.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female but tergal apical areas often translucent, smoky to brown and terga, sterna and legs often with rufescent reflections.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals first two flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segment 1 about as long as segment 2 (often slightly less or more); segment 2 longer than broad and usually slightly shorter than 3; segments 3-10 about one and one-half times as long as broad; Eyes each three and one-fourth times as long as broad, inner margins parallel to converging slightly towards ocelli; Mandibles long, decussate, when closed outer mandible exceeding midlabrum by almost half its own length, with distinct basal inferior tooth but usually small; Malar space and galea as in female; Maxillary palpus as in female but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.8:0.8:0.7:0.7; Labial palpus as in female but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.7:0.6; Labral process as in female but more strongly reflexed, usually smaller; labrum below process shiny, without median crista; Clypeus flattened apicomedially, with moderate-sized round punctures separated by half a puncture width or more, occasionally with impunctate midline in anterior half or punctures sparser apicomedially, surface shiny, unshagreened except occasionally at extreme base; Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and vertex as in female; Genal area large, in profile one and one-half to two times as broad as eye, angulate posteriorly; with minute sparse punctures throughout, surface dulled by reticular shagreening at least posteriorly.

Pronotum with distinct humeral angle and sharp ridge, area posterior to ridge shiny, often with a few weak longitudinal rugulae; Thorax otherwise sculptured as in female.

Metasomal terga as in female but punctures usually weaker and sparser and shagreening weaker, terga usually moderately shiny; Sterna 2-5 with basal areas sparsely punctate, moderately dulled by reticular shagreening; apical areas impunctate, moderately shiny; Sternum 6 with apical margin sharply reflexed.

Terminalia as in figures 97-101.

VESTITURE. — Facial hairs ochraceous except black along inner margins compound eyes and vertex, genal hairs dark except pale tuft near mandibles; rarely most head hairs pale; Thoracic hairs ochraceous to fox-red (red especially dorsally); often propodeum and pleurae with dark brown hairs entirely or in part; Tergum 1 with ochraceous hairs; tergum 2 often with pale hairs at least basomedially; terga 3-5 with dark brown to black hairs; terga 6 and 7 usually with ochraceous hairs, occasionally dark; sternal hairs dark brown but often sternum 6 and subapical fimbriae on sterna 2-5 ochraceous; Leg hairs dark except femoral hairs white to ochraceous in pale specimens and anterior femora usually with pale hairs.
