This interesting species from California and Oregon can be separated from all similar Andrena by the subgeneric characteristics mentioned above. Lanham (1949) thought that this species was most closely related to the Oligandrena despite the well-developed propodeal corbiculum. However, there does not seem to be any reason to align anisochlora with macrocephala except a general similarity in vestitural color and a yellow male clypeus.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS: N = 20; length, 8-10 mm; width, 2.5-3.0 mm; wing length, M = 3.39 ± 0.144 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.93 ± 0.005; FOVL/FOVW, M = 4.07 ± 0.085.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half or more rufescent; flagellar segments 2-10 dark reddish brown to dark brown below; tegula translucent brown; wing membranes hyaline, slightly infumate apically, veins dark reddish brown; tibial spurs yellow; distitarsi and often hind basitarsi and hind tibiae dark rufescent; metasomal terga with apical areas often translucent, brown; sterna usually more or less rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape about as long as first three flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 as long as following two and one-fourth segments; segment 2 quadrate or slightly broader than long, segments 3-10 longer than broad. Eyes each three and one-had times as long as broad or slightly longer, inner margins parallel or converging toward vertex. Malar space moderately long, minimum length equals one-fourth basal mandibular width. Mandible with small subapical tooth, surpassing midlabrum by one-fifth its length when closed, without basal tooth. Galea broad basally, outer margin concave in apical half or more, surface dull, finely tessellate. Maxillary palpus surpasses galea by last three segments; segmental ratio about 1.0:1.0:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus short, segmental ratio about 1.0:0.4:0.5:0.6. Labral process entire, broadly triangular or rounded apically; labrum below process with strong transverse shiny sulcus, without cristae. Clypeus with small punctures separated by two to three puncture widths but obscured by dense fine tessellation, roughened near apical margin. Supraclypeal area with minute crowded punctures dulling surface. Face above antennal fossae with close-set longitudinal rugulae, diverging toward vertex, with small shiny triangular area below median ocellus. Facial fovea small, extending below to a line at lower margins antennal fossae, separated from lateral ocellus by two ocellar diameters. Vertex opaque, densely tessellate, above lateral ocellus equals slightly less than one ocellar diameter. Genal area in profile broader than eye.

Pronotum without humeral angle or ridge, surface dulled by fine tessellation. Mesoscutum opaque, tessellate, punctures obscure. Scutellum and metanotum similar. Propodeum with dorsal enclosure smooth, tessellate with small sparse punctures separated by three to four puncture widths. Pleurae tessellate, opaque, punctures not evident. Wings as in subgeneric description.

Metasomal terga 1-5 opaque, tessellate, apical areas slightly less densely tessellate, punctures not evident. Pygidial plate V-shaped with rounded apex and raised internal triangular area. Sterna 2-5 each with narrow impunctate apical area, basal area with punctures separated by two to three puncture widths, sparser basally, surfaces reticularly shagreened.

VESTITURE. — Dark specimens with hair dark brown except as follows: dorsum of thorax and posterior surface propodeum dark reddish ochraceous with a few dark hairs intermixed; terga 1 and 2 dark ochraceous; hind tibial scopal hairs pale brown. Paler specimens may have thoracic hairs entirely pale ochraceous to ochraceous, leg hairs white to pale ochraceous except outer surface fore and middle tibiae and basitibial plate, and abundant pale ochraceous hairs on face and vertex.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 7.5-9.0 mm; width, 1.5-2.0 mm; wing length, M = 2.67 ± 0.163 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.85 ± 0.008; FS1/FS2, M = 1.56 ± 0.033.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Generally as in female except as follows: mandible often entirely rufescent (especially in large specimens); clypeus yellow except apical margin and narrow posterior margin; flagellar segments 2-11 often red to reddish brown beneath; wing veins usually reddish brown.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape almost as long as first three flagellar segments (about 7:8); flagellar segment 1 shorter than segment 2 plus 3 but longer than segment 3; segment 2 shorter than 3 but longer than broad. Eyes each about three times as long as broad, inner margins converging toward vertex. Malar space, galeae, maxillary palpus, and labial palpus as in female. Mandible long, not decussate (see subgeneric description). Labral process weakly emarginate apically, almost rectangular, flat, shiny. Clypeus with lateral angles enlarged (see subgeneric description); punctures minute, sparse, surface shiny at least anteriorly, reticularly shagreened. Supraclypeal area, face, vertex, and genal area as in female.

Pronotum with weak dorsoventral ridge (at least lower half evident), without humeral angle. Thoracic sculpturing and wing venation as in female.

Metasomal terga 1-6 as in female terga 1-5 but slightly shinier. Pygidial area not evident. Sterna 2-5 with apical areas impunctate, basal areas with scattered sparse punctures, surfaces moderately shiny, shagreening weak. Sternum 6 flat, apical margin entire. Terminalia as in figures 109-113. Note extremely narrow penis valves.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous, but darker specimens with brown hairs on middle of pleural areas, on face and vertex, and on metasomal terga 2 or 3-5. Terga without apical pale fasciae; sterna without subapical pale fimbriae.
