This bee is a beautiful large bee common throughout southeastern North America. It has escaped notice of systematists for several reasons. Charles Robertson did not collect the bee in the limited area of Carlinville, Illinois, and it has yet to be taken in that area despite intensive collecting in recent years. Other authors confused the bee with Andrena perplexa Smith ( = viburnella Graenicher), a species belonging in a subgenus not recognized until the present revision was begun (see LaBerge and Bouseman, 1970). The species is named after Mrs. Barbara Bouseman.

The female of Andrena barbara can be recognized by the pale scopal hairs, cristate labrum, trapezoidal labral process and distinctly punctate terga. The male of barbara is similar to that of carlini but can be recognized by the more densely and coarsely punctate terga, the form of the sixth sternum as described below, and the pale vestiture.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 11-14 mm; width, 3.0-4.5 mm; wing length, M = 4.77 ± 0.077 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.92 ± 0.003; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.86 ± 0.071.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half or less rufescent; flagellum below dark brown; tegula piceous; wing membranes slightly infumate, yellowish, veins reddish-brown; terga with slightly metallic reflections; sterna 2-5 with apical areas translucent, colorless to yellow, usually with slight rufescent reflections basally; apex of hind tibia often slightly reddened; tibial spurs testaceous.

STRUCTURE. — Antenna as in carlini but segment 2 as long as segment 3 or slightly shorter (in holotype slightly shorter). Eyes, mandible, galea and stipes as in carlini. Maxillary palpus as in carlini but segmental ratio about as 0.8:1.0:0.8:0.8:0.7:0.6. Labial palpus as in carlini but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.5. Labral process entire, shiny, usually trapezoidal (holotype), often with slight emargination apically; labrum below process with strong median crista and weak sulci on either side. Clypeus with coarse round punctures separated mostly by about half a puncture width, with median impunctate line, surface moderately shiny, shagreened at least in basal half. Supraclypeal area and face above antennal fossae as in carlini. Facial fovea as in carlini but upper end separated from lateral ocellus by slightly less than one ocellar diameter (about 7;8 in holotype). Vertex as in carlini. Genal area in profile as in carlini but surface entirely dulled by reticular shagreening.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in carlini except as follows: mesoscutal punctures larger and more distinct, small posteromedial area with punctures sparse and surface shiny to moderately shiny, shagreening weak; scutellum usually moderately shiny medially; propodeal lateral surfaces without strong vermiculate rugulae in posterior third but a few extremely weak rugulae may be present (holotype). Wing venation as in carlini.

Metasomal tergum 1 with basal area with distinct round punctures separated by half to one puncture width, becoming slightly sparser near apical area; apical area with punctures in basal half or more spaced irregularly by half to two puncture widths. Tergum 2 similar to 1 but punctures of basal area slightly denser, apical area medially equals two-fifths length of tergum. Terga 3 and 4 similar to tergum 2 but progressively less punctate and more shagreened. Terga 1 and 2 shiny, slightly shagreened especially basally. Pygidial plate broadly rounded apically, almost U-shaped. Sterna 2-5 sculptured as in carlini.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous except as follows: facial fovea with upper half or less often pale brown; dorsal thoracic hairs usually yellowish; basitibial plate and end of hind femur brown; inner surfaces tarsi yellow. Dorsal thoracic hairs relatively short and sparse (especially posteromedial mesoscutal area); terga without apical fasciae. Pollen-collecting hairs normal for subgenus.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 7.5-11.0 mm; width, 2.5-3.5 mm; wing length, M = 4.02 ± 0.132 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.87 0.005; FS1/FS2, M = 1.01 ± 0.056.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third rufescent; flagellar segments 2-11 reddish-brown to dark brown below; tegula piceous; wing membranes hyaline, slightly infumate apically, yellowish, veins reddish-brown; terga usually with extremely slight metallic reflections, often with dark rufescent reflections; sterna 2-5 with apical areas translucent, yellow, basally with rufescent reflections; tarsi rufescent; apical third or less of hind tibia usually dark rufescent; tibial spurs testaceous.

STRUCTURE. — Antenna as in carlini but flagellar segment 1 rarely longer than segment 2 and segment 2 slightly shorter than segment 3. Eyes, mandible and galea as in carlini. Maxillary palpus and labial palpus as in female. Labral process large. entire, shiny, Trapezoidal in outline; labrum below process punctate, not sulcate. Clypeus slightly longer than one-third minimum interocular distance; densely punctate and shagreened, dull, without median impunctate line. Supraclypeal area and face above antennal fossae as in carlini. Vertex as in female. Genal area as in carlini.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female but mesoscutum posteromedially dulled by shagreening and punctures sparser, propodeal dorsal area roughened in basal half or more. Wing venation as in carlini.

Metasomal tergum 1 with basal area with distinct punctures separated mostly by two puncture widths or slightly more; apical area with minute sparse punctures near base; surface moderately shiny, reticular shagreening weak. Tergum 2 with basal area punctures distinct, separated mostly by one to two puncture widths, sparser near apical area which has extremely sparse punctures basally; surface moderately shiny to shiny. Terga 3 and 4 similar but punctures progressively sparser and shagreening coarser. Pygidial area present, narrow, acute or blunt-tipped. Sterna 2-5 as in carlini. Sternum 6 with apical margin strongly turned down, without raised triangular area, punctate in apical fourth or less.

Terminalia us in figures 23-27; note form of apicomedian lobe of sternum 7 and narrow neck of sternum 8 (lateral view much as in carlini).

VESTITURE. — Pale ochraceous to white except as follows: thoracic dorsum often pale yellow; inner surface hind basitarsi pale yellow. Clypeal beard dense; terga without fasciae; sterna without fimbriae; sternum 6 with short plumose hairs directed posteriorly.
