Andrena macoupinensis is a wide-spread, southern oligolege of willows; It is closely related to A; perarmata but can be easily distinguished by its shiny clypeus, short malar space, shiny scutellum and often mesoscutum, paler vestiture, usually red or yellow hind tarsi and tibiae and often red or partially red abdomen; The female is distinguished by a relatively short tergal vestiture with apical pale fasciae on terga 2 to 4 and short tibial scopal hairs; The male is distinctive in having a pale apical tuft of hairs on sternum 6 which is flat apically but not markedly emarginate.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 9-11 mm; width, 2.5-3.5 mm; wing length, M = 4.17 ± 0.145 mm; FL/FW, 0.89 ± 0.005; FOVL/FOVW, M = 2.66 ± 0.032.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third to half rufescent; flagellar segments below dark reddish-brown; tegula dark brown to translucent brown; wing membranes hyaline, slightly infumate, veins reddish-brown to dark brown; terga 1-5 with apical areas dark rufescent to red, in pale forms abdomen entirely red except last two segments; legs dark but tarsi and hind tibiae usually yellow to red or dark rufescent; tibial spurs testaceous; All intergrades occur between the dark and pale forms.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape as long as first three flagellar segments or almost; flagellar segment 1 about as long as segments 2 and 3, segment 2 about as long as broad, as long as segment 3, slightly shorter than 4; Eyes each about three and one-half times as long as broad, inner margins parallel to converging slightly towards mandibles; Mandible as in perarmata but basal inferior tooth weak; Malar space short as in frigida; Galea as in frigida; Maxillary palpus as in frigida but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.6:0.6:0.5:0.5; Labial palpus as in frigida but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.5; Labral process in outline rounded to trapezoidal, emarginate with blunt apical teeth; labrum apical to process without crista, apical margin rounded to somewhat pointed medially, flat, shiny; Clypeus short, broad, evenly rounded from side to side, with small round punctures separated mostly by half a puncture width or less, often slightly sparser apicomedially, smaller and crowded laterally and basally; surface shiny, unshagreened except in basal third or less; Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, facial fovea, vertex and genal area as in frigida.

Pronotum as in frigida but surface shiny posterior to dorsoventral ridge; Mesoscutum with round punctures separated by two or more puncture widths posteromedially and half to one puncture width anteriorly; surface dulled by fine reticular shagreening, often shiny posteromedially and rarely shiny over most of surface; Scutellum sparsely punctate except peripherally and along midline, surface shiny, unshagreened; Propodeum with dorsal enclosure without roughening or only at extreme base, surface finely tessellate; other surfaces sculptured as in frigida; Mesepisternum as in frigida.

Metasomal terga 1-5 dull to weakly shiny, reticulotransversely shagreened, punctures obscure, minute, sparse; Pygidial plate V-shaped, narrow, apex rounded, with weak, narrow, raised, internal triangle; Sterna as in frigida.

VESTITURE. — White to ochraceous; Hair generally short; metasomal terga 2-5 usually with distinct apical pale fasciae; tergum 1 often with weak apical pale fascia; Hind tibial scopal hairs simple, short (when viewed from inner surface hairs along posterior margin less than half as long as apical tibial width); trochanteral flocculus complete; propodeal corbiculum complete, with long plumose hairs anteriorly as well as dorsally and few or no internal hairs.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 7-11 mm; width, 1.5-2.5 mm; wing length, M = 3.41 ± 0.233 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.83 ± 0.007; FS1/FS2, M = 1.22 ± 0.037.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black with same exceptions as in female but tarsi usually yellow or red; terga 1-5 with apical areas hyaline, colorless, basal areas often more or less reddened.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae moderately long; scape length equals first two and one-fourth flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segment 1 terete, usually longer than segment 2 and about as long as segment 3, occasionally longer; segments 3 to 10 about one and one-third times as long as broad; Eyes each about three times as long as broad, inner margins parallel to converging slightly towards mandibles; Mandible as in perarmata; Malar space short, as in frigida; Galea as in frigida; Maxillary palpus as in frigida but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.7:0.7:0.5:0.4; Labial palpus as in frigida but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.4:0.4; Labral process as in female but more deeply emarginate; labrum apical to process shiny, without crista; Clypeus extremely short and broad, slightly rounded from side to side with small crowded punctures, surface shiny, unshagreened except at extreme base; Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae as in female; Vertex short but above lateral ocellus often equal to one ocellar diameter, sculptured as in frigida; Genal area as in frigida.

Pronotum as in frigida; Mesoscutum, scutellum, propodeum and mesepisternum sculptured as in female.

Metasomal terga 1-5 sculptured as in female but often slightly shinier; Tergum 7 without pseudopygidial area; Sterna 2-5 sculptured as in frigida; Sternum 6 with apical margin flat, not reflexed, not emarginate, somewhat thickened subapically.

Terminalia as in figures 37 to 41; Note sternum 7 with apex entire, shouldered; sternum 8 with apical section narrow.

VESTITURE. — White to ochraceous but inner surfaces tarsi pale yellow; Clypeus with dense beard of long hairs; terga 2-5 with weak apical pale fasciae often present; sterna 2-5 with weak subapical fasciae; sternum 6 with dense tuft of short erect hairs in apical third.
