This moderate-sized western species is the most abundant and widespread of the Dasyandrena. The female of cristata differs from that of obscuripostica by having a longer, emarginate labral process with a well-formed, lamellate, median crista below the process. In addition the labral process has several minute transverse rugulae across its base and the propodeum and metasomal terga are less coarsely sculptured, as described below. The male of cristata is very similar to that of obscuripostica but can be recognized by the longer emarginate labral process which has its basal sulcus dulled by minute transverse rugulae. The propodeum and metasomal terga of the male of cristata are often less coarsely sculptured than in obscuripostica, but this difference is not as reliable as in the female.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS: N = 20; length, 7-11 mm width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 3.46 ± 0.120 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.92 ± 0.004; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.78 ± 0.032.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black with same exceptions as in obscuripostica.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equal to first three and one-half flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segments as in obscuripostica. Eyes, malar space, mandible and galea as in obscuripostica. Maxillary palpus as in obscuripostica but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.8:0.8:0.6:0.6. Labial palpus as in obscuripostica but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.6:0.5. Labral process usually less than twice as broad at base as long, weakly emarginate apically, usually flat, surface moderately dulled by minute transverse rugulae; labrum below process with a strong, lamellate, median crista, surface on either side of crista shiny. Clypeus as in obscuripostica but median impunctate line often absent and surface often weakly shagreened throughout. Supraclypeal area, genal area, vertex, face above antennal fossae and facial fovea as in obscuripostica.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in obscuripostica except as follows mesoscutum posteromedially and scutellum medially often with tessellation weak, moderately shiny; propodeum with dorsal enclosure evenly tessellate throughout or with finely areolate area basomedially, outside of enclosure punctate but rarely punctatorugose and never with short rugulae radiating from margins of enclosure. Wing venation as in obscuripostica.

Metasomal terga 1-4 as in obscuripostica but tessellation weaker, often appearing as reticular shagreening especially in apical areas, surfaces moderately shiny in apical areas to dull on discs; punctures in apical areas sparser especially medially. Pygidial plate and sterna as in obscuripostica.

VESTITURE. — ale ochraceous (almost white) to ochraceous, usually darker on thoracic dorsum and vertex, except as follows: vertex and along inner margins of eyes with long dark brown hairs; facial foveae dark brown terga 5 and 6 dark brown; on and surrounding basitibial plate and posterior margin of tibial scopa (as much as half of scopa) dark brown. Hair in general distributed as in obscuripostica except as follows: tergum 1 without apical fascia; terga 2-4 with apical fasciae less dense, usually interrupted medially; tibial scopal hairs long, sparse (along midline of tibia piliferous punctures separated mostly by one to two puncture widths).

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-11 mm; width, 1.5-2.5 mm; wing length, M = 3.26 ± 0.175 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.94 ± 0.005; FS1/FS2, M = 1.08 ± 0.025.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black with same exceptions as in obscuripostica.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae as in obscuripostica but flagellar segments 3-10 often slightly less than one and one-half times as long as broad. Eyes, malar space, mandible and galea as in obscuripostica. Maxillary palpus as in obscuripostica but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.8:0.8:0.8:0.7. Labial palpus as in obscuripostica but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.7:0.6. Labral process usually more than twice as long as basal width, narrowed, emarginate and slightly reflexed apically, basal sulcus with four or five minute transverse rugulae, labrum apical to process shiny, with or without weak median crista. Clypeus, supraclypeal area, vertex, genal area and face above antennal fossae as in obscuripostica.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in obscuripostica but propodeum often less coarsely sculptured, usually dorsal enclosure at least apically tessellate without areola, outside of enclosure often only moderately punctatorugose and rarely with short rugulae radiating from margins of enclosure. Wing venation as in obscuripostica.

Metasomal terga, sterna and pygidial plate as in obscuripostica but terga 1 and 2 with discal areas usually slightly less coarsely and densely tessellate, often reticularly shagreened and at least moderately shiny. Terminalia as in Figure 79-83.

VESTITURE. — As in obscuripostica.
