This species is related to A. foxii and to A. chalybaea and A. parachalybea and is readily distinguished by the long, narrow labral process, shiny mesoscutum, and the dorsolateral angle of the pronotum, which reaches the greatest degree of elaboration in this species.

There appears to be a clinal trend toward darker, yellowish facial pubescence and more deeply emarginate apices of the labral processes in individuals from south to north.

FEMALE. — Integument olive-green; antenna uniformly dark brownish-black, clypeus with a narrow, transverse, subapical, dark band with violaceous reflections (occasionally with a small median dorsal projection), forewing with stigma yellow-brown; pubescence pale, white on clypeus, frons, vertex, and genae, black laterally on face along inner margin of base of eye and thin horizontal line above ocelli on vertex, dorsal and outer margins of eye, brown on clypeal apex, white on mesosoma, outer surface of tibial scopa white anteriorly, dark brown posteriorly, white on metasoma, anal fimbriae light, yellow-brown; facial fovea with black sheen, tomentum brown. Head tessellate, densely punctate; clypeus, latero- and supraclypeal areas moderately coarsely, closely punctate with shiny, finely tessellate interspaces, punctures separated by less than one diameter; facial fovea extending from summit of eye to just below antennal base; eye slightly arcuate medially; antenna with segments 1 to 3 of flagellum as 18: 6: 6; labrum with process narrow, parallel-sided, faintly emarginate at apex (fig. 7); subgenal coronet long, well developed; gena above finely, densely punctate with tessellate interspaces, below finely, longitudinally striate with striations becoming more coarse ventroposteriorly; pubescence of clypeus suberect. Mesosoma coarsely, moderately closely punctate with moderately shiny, tessellate interspaces; pronotum with punctures separated by 1 to 2 diameters, transversely tessellate interspaces, dorsolateral angle right-angled, flat laterally but not infolded; mesoscutum with punctures separated by one diameter, notaulus indistinct; scutellum closely punctate, punctures separated by less than one diameter along median line and apical and lateral edges, centrolateral area shinier with punctures separated by 1 to 2 diameters; metanotum dull with punctures separated by less than one diameter; propodeum moderately shiny, finely rugulose, enclosure longitudinally rugose basally with somewhat elongate, median longitudinal carina, very finely, transversely striate apically; episternum 2 densely, coarsely punctate, punctures contiguous; wing lightly infuscated, submarginals 1: 2 (24: 22.5), stigma : rest of marginal cell (19: 30), hind wing with jugal lobe broad and with incision between it and vannal, reaching beyond level of cu-v; posterior trochanter with long, curved, white perfect floccus; tibial scopa long, loose, moderately dense, simple, except for narrow band of plumose hairs along inner posterior margin, posterior hairs of scopa about one and one-half times as long as width of tibia at apex; pubescence of mesoscutum predominantly long, pale with few short, dark hairs intermixed. Metasoma somewhat shiny, tessellate; first tergum with numerous, large, irregularly spaced punctures with anterior margin somewhat elevated like tilted craters; terga 2 to 4 with punctures smaller and regularly spaced on basal elevations, few and scattered on depressed apical margins; pubescence long, erect, sparse, successively shorter on succeeding segments, that of tergum 1 twice as long as that of tergum 2. Length 10 to 12 mm, forewing 7.5 to 9 mm.

MALE. — Integument olive-green; antenna uniformly dark brownish-black; clypeus with small median triangular subapical dark area with violaceous reflections, forewing with stigma yellow-brown; pubescence pale, white except laterally on face along inner margin of eye, thin horizontal line on vertex above ocelli, dorsal and outer margins of eye black. Head tessellate, densely punctate; clypeus, latero- and supraclypeal areas closely, coarsely punctate with shiny, finely tessellate interspaces, punctures separated by less than one diameter; parocular depression short; eyes slightly convergent below; antenna with segments 1 to 3 of flagellum as 16:9:10; labrum with process narrow, somewhat parallel-sided, shallowly emarginate at apex (fig. 8); mandibles long, decussate; gena above finely, densely punctate with tessellate interspaces, below finely, longitudinally striate with striations becoming more coarse ventroposteriorly; pubescence of clypeus long, subdepressed. Mesosoma coarsely, moderately closely punctate with moderately dull interspaces; pronotum with punctures separated by 1 to 2 diameters, interspaces transversely tessellate, dorsolateral angles elevated and sharply angulate with thickened lateral fold which projects anteriorly (figs. 81 and 82); mesoscutum with punctures separated by 1 to 2 diameters, notaulus indistinct; scutellum closely punctate, punctures separated by less than one diameter along midline and apical lateral borders, centrolateral areas shinier with punctures separated by 1 to 2 diameters; metanotum dull with punctures separated by loss than one diameter; propodeum moderately shiny, finely rugulose, enclosure irregularly longitudinally rugose on basal two-thirds with long, distinct, median longitudinal carina, very finely obliquely striate apicolaterally and finely horizontally striate apically; episternum 2 densely, coarsely, contiguously punctate; wing pale, submarginals 1:2 (20:21), stigma : rest of marginal cell (19:28), hind wing with jugal lobe broad and with incision between it and vannal, reaching beyond level of cu-v; pubescence predominantly long, pale, with few short, dark hairs intermixed. Metasoma somewhat shiny, tessellate; tergum 1 with numerous, large, irregularly spaced punctures with anterior margin somewhat elevated like tilted craters; terga 2 to 4 with punctures smaller and regularly spaced on basal elevations, few and scattered on depressed apical margins; sternum 9 (ftp. 70); genital capsule (fig. 59); pubescence long, erect, sparse. Length 10 to 12 mm, forewing 7.5 to 9 mm.
