This small western bee is related to A. vicinoides but not closely; Both sexes of edwardsi are like those of vicinoides in having well-formed basal inferior mandibular teeth and similar vestitural color but differ in the relatively wide head and broad, short labral process (especially in the female); The clypeus of both sexes is relatively sparsely punctate and the mesoscutum is shiny posteromedially with distinct punctures; The scutellum of edwardsi is also shiny as in ceanothifloris which it resembles superficially.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-10 mm; width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 3.37±0.100 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.93±0.006; FOVL/ FOVW, M = 3.31 ±0.053.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in vicinoides but wing membranes only slightly infumate and tibial spurs usually dark reddish-brown.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae as in vicinoides; Eyes each about three and one-half times as long as broad, inner margins parallel; Mandible as in vicinoides; Malar space long, minimum length equals about one-third basal mandibular width or more; Galea as in vicinoides but usually shiny except near tip; Maxillary palpus as in vicinoides but segmental ratio about as 0.9:1.0:0.9:0.8:0.6:0.8; Labral palpus as in vicinoides but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.5; Labral process short, broad, three times as broad as long or broader, bidentate, reflexed; labrum apical to process weakly concave with weak median crista, usually dull, finely shagreened; Clypeus evenly rounded, not much protuberant, sparsely punctate except near base, shiny and unshagreened except near base and in lateral angles; Supraclypeal area as in vicinoides; Face above antennal fossae as in vicinoides but rugulae diverge towards ocelli; Facial fovea as in vicinoides but narrower, separated from lateral ocellus by one ocellar diameter or slightly less; Vertex as in vicinoides but above lateral ocellus usually equal to slightly less than one ocellar diameter; Genal area as in vicinoides but usually shinier; Thoracic form and sculpturing as in vicinoides except as follows: mesoscutum with posteromedian area sparsely punctate, shiny, not shagreened, anterior half with fine shagreening and distinct punctures separated mostly by half to one puncture width; scutellum shiny, unshagreened, sparsely punctate except extreme periphery.

Metasomal terga sculptured as in vicinoides but punctures absent or virtually so; Pygidial plate and sterna as in vicinoides.

VESTITURE. — Head dark brown to black except face surrounding antennal fossae pale ochraceous and posterior genal and vertex hairs usually pale; Thorax with white to ochraceous hairs except scutellum and mesoscutum with shiny areas with dark brown to black hairs; Leg hairs brown except trochanteral flocculus and usually hind femora with hairs pale; Metasomal vestiture dark brown except pale on tergum 1 and often basally on tergum 2 (especially laterally).

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 7-9 mm; width, 1.0-1.5 mm; wing length, M = 2.91±0.101 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.91±0.006; FS1/FS2, M = 1.21 ±0.023.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in female.

STRUCTURE. — Scape length equal to first two and one-third flagellar segments or slightly less; flagellar segment 1 distinctly longer than segment 2 which is longer than broad and usually shorter than segment 3; median flagellar segments about one and one-third times as long as broad; Eyes each about three and one-fourth times as long as broad, inner margins parallel; Mandible long, decussate with basal tooth well-formed; Malar space long, about one-third as long as basal mandibular width; Galea as in female; Maxillary palpus as in female but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.9:0.9:0.7:0.8; Labial palpus as in female but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.6:0.7; Labral process as in female but often not as broad; labrum apical to process shiny, flat, without median crista; Clypeus as in female but punctures slightly less sparse except in median third; Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae and vertex as in female; Genal area in profile one and one-half to two times as broad as eye, surface with sparse punctures, dulled posteriorly by fine shagreening; Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female but pronotum with more distinct dorsoventral ridge and angle.

Metasomal terga sculptured as in female; Pseudopygidial area not present or covered by hair; Sterna 2-5 sculptured as in vicinoides; Sternum 6 with apical margin not abruptly reflexed.

Terminalia as in figures 142-146.

VESTITURE. — Head with white hairs except black on vertex, upper part of face, along inner margins of eyes and genal areas near eyes; Thoracic hair white to ochraceous, usually with dark brown to black on scutellum, posteromedially on mesoscutum, and on propodeum at least laterally; Terga 1 and 2 with pale hairs, 3-5 with sparse brown hairs, 6 and 7 with pale or brown hairs; Sterna 2-5 with pale hairs including pale subapical fimbriae; sternum 6 often with pale hairs basally, apical fourth with short erect brown plumose hairs (similar to tuft of hairs on sternum 6 of A; macoupinensis but not as prominent).
