This large southeastern species has been confused with Andrena sayi Robertson by several authors. However, sayi belongs in the carlini group of species with females with a complete trochanteral flocculus, whereas illini females have the trochanteral flocculus incomplete as in the vicina group of species. The male of illini is similar to that of pruni but differs in that it lacks the tuft of long hairs on sternum 6. The female of illini is very much like that of hilaris but can be distinguished by the lack of tergal bands and the completely rugulose propodeal dorsal enclosure. The male of illini is distinctive in having a few to several distinct punctures near the apical margin of the labral process.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 13-15 mm; width, 3.5-5.0 mm; wing length, M = 5.37 ± 0.586 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.98 ± 0.009; FOVL/ FOVW, M = 3.21 ± 0.083.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half or more rufescent; flagellar segments 3-10 dark reddish-brown to brown below; tegula translucent, ferruginous; wing membranes moderately infumate, especially apically. brownish-yellow, veins reddish-brown to brown (subcosta dark); metasomal terga with apical areas slightly translucent, rufescent; sterna 2-5 with apical areas hyaline, yellow, basal areas with rufescent reflections; tarsi and usually hind tibia dark rufescent; tibial spurs testaceous to red.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equal to first three and one-fourth flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segments as in vicina. Eyes each about four times as long as broad, inner margins converging slightly toward vertex. Mandible, liar space and galea as in vicina. Maxillary palpus as in vicina but segmental ratio about as 0.8:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.7:0.6. Labial palpus as in vicina but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.6. Labral process large, entire, apical margin rounded or trapezoidal, with four or five relatively coarse striae across basal half; labrum apical to process without median crista, with or without weak lateral cristae, punctate near process. Clypeus flattened medially, with large punctures separated by half a puncture width or less, median impunctate line present, narrow; surface shiny, shagreened at extreme base to lightly shagreened in basal third (rare). Supraclypeal area dulled by minute crowded punctures and fine tessellation. Face above antennal fossae, facial fovea and vertex as in vicina. Genal area as in vicina but in profile almost twice as wide as eye.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in vicina except as follows: scutellum often moderately shiny medially, shagreening fine; propodeum with dorsal enclosure finely areolate to finely rugulate throughout, apex often with three or four fine transverse rugulae; mesepisternal punctures as in vicina but somewhat more dense. Wing venation, tibial spurs and tarsal claws as in vicina.

Metasomal tergum 1 with basal area with small punctures separated by two to four or more puncture widths (irregular); apical area with narrow impunctate rim. broader medially, basally with distinct punctures separated mostly by half to one puncture width or slightly more (sparser near midline); surface moderately shiny. finely reticularly shagreened. Tergum 2 with basal area punctures moderately large. separated regularly by half to one and one-half puncture widths, rarely more; apical area punctures as in tergum 1 but more crowded; surface shiny to moderately shiny. fine shagreening usually present basally and usually absent in apical half. Terga 3 and 4 similar to tergum 2 but tergum 4 punctures sparser. Pygidial plate broad. V-shaped, as broad at base as length, apex blunt or broadly rounded, without internal raised triangular area. Sterna 2-5 sculptured as in vicina but shiny to moderately so.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous to ochraceous; facial foveal hairs white; tarsi with posterior surface pale yellow; terga 6 and 7 often with yellow or golden hairs. Form and distribution of hair as in vicina but thoracic hairs sparse and basal tergal hairs long and erect.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 9-14 mm; width, 2-4 mm; wing length, M = 4.77 ± 1.03 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.93 ± 0.026; FSI/FS2, M = 1.11 ± 0.036.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical fourth to one-third rufescent; flagellar segments 2-11 dark reddish-brown below; tegula translucent, ferruginous; wing membranes moderately infumate, yellow to yellowish-brown, veins red to reddish-brown; metasomal terga with apical areas more or less translucent, yellow apically to red or piceous at base, basal areas often with dark rufescent reflections; sterna 2-5 with apical areas hyaline, basal areas often rufescent; distitarsi, hind basitarsi dark rufescent to brown, more basal leg segments often with rufescent reflections; tibial spurs testaceous to reddish.

STRUCTURE. — Antenna moderately long, in repose reaching metanotum; scape length equals first two and two-thirds flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 slightly longer than segment 2 and as long as 3, segments 3-10 one and one-third times as long as broad or slightly longer, Eyes each three and three-fourths to four times as long as broad, inner margins converging toward vertex. Mandible, malar space and galea as in female. Maxillary palpus as in vicina but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.6:0.7. Labial palpus as in vicina but ratio about as 1.0:0.5:0.4:0.5. Labral process large, apical margin moderately emarginate or sinuous, occasionally entire, basal depressed area with two to five, relatively coarse, transverse rugulae, shiny apical area with two to several distinct punctures near apex (one specimen out of 174 lacks punctures); labrum below process without sulcus, punctate. Clypeus as in female but occasionally lightly shagreened throughout and usually lacking median impunctate line. Face above antennal fossae, supraclypeal area, vertex and genal area as in female.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in female but propodeum with dorsal enclosure (Am lacking apical transverse rugulae and surface outside of enclosure usually slightly more roughened by punctures. Wing venation, tibial spurs and tarsal claws as in vicina.

Metasomal tergum 1 as in female but punctures sparser both in basal and apical areas. Terga 2-5 as in female terga 2-4 but punctures sparser; tergum 2 with basal area punctures separated by two or more puncture widths, apical area punctures separated by one to two puncture widths except medially where sparser. Pygidial area distinct, broad for male, basal width two to two and one-half times length, apex rounded, surface finely punctate. Sterna 2-5 sculptured as in vicina. Sternum 6 with apical margin shallowly emarginate.

Terminalia as in figures 89-93; note gonocoxite with dorsal lobe short, sternum 7 with apical emargination broad, shallow, and sternum 8 with apex truncate.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous to ochraceous but inner surfaces tarsi pale yellow. Terga without distinct apical fasciae; sterna 2-5 without subapical fimbriae. Dorsal thoracic hairs moderately long, relatively sparse. Sternum 6 without tuft of long dependent hairs, with moderately long, decumbent hairs spreading outward from midline.
