This species from the Rocky Mountain and upper Great Plains regions is closely related to vicina. The female of lupinorum differs from that of vicina by the lack of a labral sulcus below the labral process, by the more coarsely punctate clypeus, and by the shorter thoracic vestiture. The male of lupinorum differs from that of vicina by the longer first flagellar segment, the more coarsely punctate clypeus, and the emarginate eight sternum. The male of lupinorum resembles that of nivalis in the emarginate eighth sternum, but the longer first flagellar segment and the long hairs of terga 3 and 4 will separate these species.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 11-14 mm; width 3.0-4.5 mm; wing length, M = 4.91 ± 0.217 mm; Fl./FW, M = 0.98 ± 0.004; FOVL/FOVW, M = 2.96 ± 0.033.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third to half rufescent; flagellar segments below dark reddish-brown; tegula translucent at summit, rufescent; wing membranes moderately infumate, yellowish-brown, veins reddish-brown to black; terga with apical areas slightly translucent, often with rufescent reflections; sterna with apical areas translucent to hyaline, yellow, basally usually with rufescent reflections; distitarsi dark rufescent; tibial spurs piceous to reddish-brown.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae as in vicina but flagellar segment 1 as long as segments 2 plus 3 or slightly longer, segment 2 usually broader than long, and segment 3 quadrate. Eyes each about four times as long as broad, inner margins parallel. Mandible as in vicina. Galea as in vicina but usually shiny except apically. Malar space as in vicina . Maxillary palpus as in vicina but segmental ratio about as 0.9:1.0:0.8:0.7:0.6:0.6. Labial palpus as in vicina but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.5:0.6. Labral process entire, trapezoidal, apical margin thickened, with several fine transverse striae basally; labrum below process without transverse sulcus, convex, with several weak cristae but no strong median crista. Clypeus as in vicina but punctures coarse to base medially and with shagreening extremely weak to absent mediobasally. Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, facial fovea, vertex, and genal area as in vicina.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in vicina except as follows; scutellum often with more dense punctures (almost as dense as in nivalis); mesepisternum with punctures more evident, separated mostly by one puncture width or less. Wing venation as in vicina but pterostigma narrower and second submarginal cell smaller. Tibial spurs and claws normal.

metasomal terga sculptured as in vicina but punctures usually deeper and more evident. Pygidial plate V-shaped with acute apex except when worn, without raised internal triangular area. Sterna! sculpturing as in vicina.

vestiture. — Head hairs dark brown except long pale ochraceous on vertex and on face surrounding antennal fossae to entirely ochraceous; facial fovea with short hairs dark brown in dark specimens to brown in upper half or entirely pale ochraceous. Thoracic hairs ochraceous to dull fox-red above and dark brown below and on sides to entirely ochraceous. Metasoma entirely dark brown except a few pale hairs basally on tergum I to pale specimens with basal areas terga 1 and 2 with long pale hairs. Leg hairs dark brown except femora at least partly pale to entirely so; scopal hairs rarely pale brown posteriorly. Form and distribution of hair as in vicina but dorsal thoracic hairs relatively short, erect and plumose, and terga with basal area hairs erect, slightly longer than in vicina.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 10-13 mm; width, 2.5-3.5 mm; wing length, M = 4.43 ± 0.366 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.99 ± 0.005; FS1/FS2, M = 1.25 0.019.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third rufescent; flagellar segments below dark brown to reddish-brown; tegula translucent at summit, rufescent; wing membranes slightly infumate, yellowish-brown, veins dark reddish-brown; terga with apical areas more or less hyaline, yellow to brown, with basal dark rufescent reflections; sterna 2-5 with apical areas hyaline, basally with rufescent reflections; distitarsi rufescent, often more basal leg segments dark rufescent; tibial spurs piceous to reddish-brown.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae reaching scutellum in repose; scape length equals first two and one-half flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 slightly longer than segment 2 but always less than one and one-half times as long; segment 2 shorter than segment 3, slightly longer than broad; median segments about one and one-third times as long as broad. Eyes each about three and one-fourth times as long as broad, inner margins parallel. Mandible, galea and malar space as in female. Maxillary palpus as in female but segmental ratio about as 0.9; 1.0:0.7:0.7:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus as 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.6. Labral process trapezoidal, often extremely shallowly emarginate apically, apical half thickened, basal depression with weak irregular striae; labrum below process convex, shiny with punctures basally. Clypeus as in female but shagreening usually absent basally. Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, vertex and genal area as in vicina.

Thoracic form and sculpturing as in vicina but propodeum outside of dorsal enclosure with surface slightly less roughened by punctures. Wing venation as in vicina but pterostigma usually slightly narrower than from inner margin prestigma to anterior wing margin and second submarginal cell often receiving vein 1st m-cu beyond middle of cell. Tibial spurs and tarsal claws normal.

Metasomal terga sculptured as in vicina but punctures usually deeper and more distinct. Pygidial area narrow, acute. Sterna 2-5 as in vicina: sternum 6 with apical margin straight across or extremely weakly and broadly emarginate.

Terminalia as in figures 64-68.

VESTITURE. — Generally ochraceous except as follows: vertex often with several brown hairs above compound eyes; tergum 3 often with basal area hairs mixed dark and pale; tergum 4 with long hairs entirely dark brown or mixed dark and pale; terga 5-7 usually with brown hairs, in pale specimens some pale hairs laterally; sterna entirely pale ochraceous but dark specimens with sterna 5 and 6 brown to pale brown at least mediobasally. Leg hairs pale ochraceous except inner surfaces tarsi and hind tibiae, outer surfaces middle and hind tarsi and middle tibia and on and surrounding basitibial plates and along midline of hind tibia dark brown. Palest specimens have leg hairs mostly ochraceous but basitibial plates brown and posterior surface hind basitarsi and tibiae pale brown.
