Andrena merriami is related to A. hicksi and can be distinguished by the shorter face and shorter galea. The female of merriami has light-colored hairs on the thoracic dorsum and toothed tarsal claws, while the male has dark hairs restricted to the head.

The descriptions below are based mainly on a pair from near Bosler, Wyoming.

FEMALE. — MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — Length, 8.5 mm; width, 2.5 mm; wing length, 7.1 mm; FL/FW, 1.03; FOVL/FOVW, 4.00.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black to dark brown except as follows: mandible with apical half rufescent; wing membranes amber, veins dark amber; tegulae dark amber; terga 1-5 with apical areas dark amber; front tibial spur amber.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape as long as first four flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 slightly longer than segments 2 plus 3; segment 2 equal in length to 3, each broader than long and shorter than 4; segments 4-9 quadrate. Eyes each 3.8 times as long as broad, inner margins nearly parallel. Mandible moderately long, at rest reaching nearly to far corner of labrum, with inner subapical tooth. Galea pointed, broad, surface moderately dulled by fine reticular shagreening. Stipes with abruptly bent hairs. Labial palpus with first segment flattened, long, curved, segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.5:0.5:0.5. Maxillary palpus surpassing galea by less than last two segments, segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:0.7:0.7:1.0:1.0. Labral process moderate in size, subtriangular, apex narrowly truncate, elevated; labrum below process flat, moderately dull. Clypeus rounded from side to side, center with large punctures separated mostly by one puncture width, midline with impunctate area, surface dulled by fine reticular shagreening. Supraclypeal area dulled by minute punctures and shagreening. Face above antennal fossae with coarse longitudinal rugulae and fine shagreening, moderately dull. Facial fovea rather narrow, separated from lateral ocellus by about one ocellar diameter, extending down to about level of lower margins antennal fossae. Vertex above lateral ocellus normal, about as high as one ocellar diameter, dull. Genal area only slightly wider than eye in profile; surface dull, small punctures obscured by rather coarse reticular shagreening.

Pronotum without humeral angles or carinae, small punctures obscured by moderate reticular shagreening. Mesoscutum dull, with rather large punctures obscured by coarse reticular shagreening, center shinier with moderate to fine shagreening. Scutellum in center sculptured as center of mesoscutum. Propodeum with dorsal area triangular with many basal rugulae; dorsolateral and posterior surfaces with medium punctures obscured by coarse yet rather smooth, even reticular shagreening; lateral surfaces shiny, with few small piliferous punctures, fine even reticular shagreening. Mesepisternum dulled by rather coarse reticular shagreening and medium-sized punctures. Wings with pterostigma medium-sized, broader than from inner margin prestigma to wing margin; vein 1st m-cu meets second submarginal cell near center of cell, second submarginal cell medium-sized, distinctly narrowed anteriorly. Tarsal claws with large, inner, subapical tooth; hind tibia greatly widened, triangular.

Metasomal terga 1-4 with apicolateral elevations moderately shiny with fine reticular shagreening and minute scattered punctures, graduli hidden with abdomen in normal position. Tergum 5 with large punctures, reticular shagreening. Pygidial plate V-shaped with rounded apex, flat in center, shiny, margins upturned when unworn. Sterna 2-5 with small rather close punctures, surface shiny, fine reticular shagreening.

VESTITURE. — Generally dark brown to black, long, abundant. Vertex of head and thoracic dorsum with white hairs; propodeal corbicula incomplete anteriorly with several long simple internal hairs; tibial scopal hairs simple, becoming short towards apex of tibia, hairs along anterior margin mostly curved posteriorly hiding surface. Abdomen without fasciae; sterna 2-5 with subapical fimbriae.

MALE. — MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — Length, 8.0 mm; width, 1.9 mm; wing length, 5.9 mm; FL/FW, 1.02; FS1/FS2, 2.00.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black to dark brown with same exceptions as in female but clypeus white except apex and two small dark spots, parocular area with small spot of white along clypeal margin, middle tibial spur amber, hind spur dark amber.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae of moderate length, reaching metanotum in repose; scape almost as long as first three flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 distinctly shorter than segments 2 plus 3, segment 2 shorter than 3 and broader than long, segments 3-11 longer than broad. Eyes each three times as long as broad, inner margins distinctly converging towards mandibles. Mandible and galea as in female. Stipes weakly setose. Labial palpus as in female but ratio about 1.0:0.7:0.3:0.7. Maxillary palpus as in female but ratio about 1.0:1.0:1.0:1.0:0.5:1.0. Labral process small, quadrate, deeply notched at apex; labrum below process flat, shiny. Clypeus as in female hut shinier, shagreening weak to absent in center. Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, vertex and genal area as in female.

Pronotum. mesoscutum and scutellum as in female. Propodeum as in female but shagreening on dorsolateral and posterior surfaces coarser and less even. Mesepisternum, wings and tarsal claws as in female. Hind tibia slightly swollen at apex.

Metasomal sculpturing as in female but tergum 1 without apicolateral elevation; terga with small closer punctures; pygidial plate absent; sterna 2-5 with punctures more scattered. Sternum 6 bent downward at apex, slightly emarginate.

Terminalia as in figures 64-69; note the following: gonocoxite with dorsal lobes short and broadly rounded, apex moderate in width; penis valve wide, with large rounded dorsal lamellae, apex short, thick, broadly rounded in ventral view; sternum 7 with large apical notch; sternum 8 not widened at apex, with deep apical emargination.

VESTITURE. — Generally white, long, abundant except as follows: some black hairs on face and gena: tergum 1 with long hairs, on other terga hairs of moderate length, suberect; terga 2-4 with weak apical fasciae, reduced to a few hairs laterally; sterna 2-5 with subapical fimbriae.

VARIATION. — In the Pullman, Washington area and adjacent Oregon and Idaho some females have the vertex of the head depressed in such a way that the ocelli are on an elevated hump. Normal and intermediate females are also found in this same area. In the females the hairs on the thoracic dorsum vary from reddish-yellow to white, even in specimens collected together.

Specimens from the eastern part of the range average smaller in size.
