This Southern California bee was collected and first recognized as new by Professor P. H. Timberlake, after whom it has been named. A. waldmerei is very similar to the more eastern A. wilmattae which it resembles in general sculpturing and color. However, waldmerei females and males have shorter vertices than does wilmattae. Furthermore, the female of waldmerei lacks an impunctate median clypeal line and the leg hairs are dark brown at least in part. The male of waldmerei differs from that of wilmattae in the labral process which is not at all raised or ridged laterally and the longer first flagellar segment.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 16; length, 13-14 nun; width, 3.5-4.0 mm; wing length, M = 4.81 ± 0.147 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.97 ± 0.006; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.11 ± 0.044.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible usually with apical half rufescent; flagellum dark brown below; wing veins and pterostigma dark brown, membranes moderately infumate; sterna rufescent; distitarsi somewhat rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals flagellar segments 1-3 or very slightly more; flagellar segment 1 slightly longer than segments 2 plus 3; segment 2 equal in length to 3 or slightly shorter and shorter than 4; segments 2 and 3 quadrate, 4-10 longer than broad. Eyes each about three and two-thirds times as long as broad, inner margins parallel. Malar space and mandible as in perplexa. Galea as in perplexa but shinier. Maxillary palpus as in perplexa but segmental ratio about 1.0:1.2:0.9:0.9:0.8:0.6. Labial palpus as in perplexa but ratio about 1.0: 0.7:0.5:0.5. Labral process two and one-half (holotype) to three times as broad at base as long, entire, round at apex; labrum below process without prominent cristae, without shiny transverse sulcus, crossed by several weak longitudinal rugulae and dulled by fine shagreening. Clypeus rounded, without median impunctate line, punctures deep, round, irregular, separated mostly by half a puncture width or slightly more, surface shiny, finely shagreened especially posteriorly. Supraclypeal area and genal area as in perplexa. Vertex short, above lateral ocellus equals about one ocellar diameter (holotype) or slightly more (about as 9:10), dulled by regular tessellation and obscure shallow punctures. Face above antennae with fine, close-set, longitudinal rugae and close-set interrugal punctures dulling surface. Facial fovea as in perplexa.

Pronotum with humeral angle and ridge poorly developed; oblique suture impressed but not deeply so; surface reticularly shagreened with scattered minute punctures, moderately shiny at least anteriorly. Thoracic sculpturing as in perplexa except as follows: mesoscutal surface regularly and finely shagreened, dull; propodeal dorsal enclosure without coarse granulations or rugulae (holotype) or with coarse granulations in narrow basal zone only. Venation as in wilmattae. Tergum 1 with small round punctures separated by two to four puncture widths except along narrow apical margin, surface dulled by reticular shagreening which is slightly coarser in somewhat shinier apical area. Terga 2-4 with apical areas with minute sparse punctures in basal three-fourths, basal areas with small crowded punctures separated mostly by one puncture width or slightly more; surfaces moderately dulled in apical areas to dull in basal areas, reticularly shagreened. Pygidial plate broadly V-shaped with rounded apex. Sterna as in erythrogaster.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous to ochraceous, slightly darker on vertex and thoracic dorsum. Terga without trace of apical pale fasciae, with short, suberect, relatively simple hairs basally (especially towards sides); terga 5 and 6 brown at least medially. Propodeal corbicula without anterior long plumose hairs. Tibiae with outer surfaces brown at least in part; tibial scopal hairs brown medially and posteriorly full length of tibia. Tarsi with outer surfaces pale brown, inner surfaces reddish-brown.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 13; length, 9.5-13.0 mm; width, 2.5-3.5 mm; wing length, M = 4.37 ± 0.289 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.93 ± 0.005; FS1/FS2, M = 1.83 ± 0.026.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third rufescent; flagellar segments 2-11 brown below; wing veins and pterostigma dark brown, membranes moderately infumate; terga 2 and 3 often slightly rufescent across middle of basal areas; sterna more or less rufescent; distitarsi somewhat rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae moderately long, in repose reaching back to scutellum; flagellar segment 2 distinctly shorter than 3, quadrate, segments 3-11 longer than broad. Eyes each about three and one-fourth times as long as broad, inner margins parallel. Malar space and galea as in female. Mandible as in female but somewhat longer, moderately decussate. Maxillary palpus as in female but segmental ratio about 0.9:1.0:0.9:0.9:0.6:0.6. Labial palpus as in female but ratio about 1.0:0.7:0.4:0.4. Labral process about twice as long as broad, emarginate apically, thickened so that surface arches outward, shiny, a few transverse rugulae at extreme base; apex of labrum without cristae or sulcus. Clypeus rounded, short, sculptured as in female but surface duller, reticularly shagreened. Genal area, vertex and face above antennae as in female.

Pronotum with humeral angle weak but more distinct than in female, a simple triangular angle; oblique suture impressed but gently so; sculpture as in female. Thoracic sculpturing as in female but propodeal dorsal enclosure usually more rugulate or granular basally. Terga sculptured as in female except as follows: terga 4 and 5 like terga 2 and 3 but punctures progressively sparser; apical areas terga 2-5 more broadly impunctate apically; basal areas terga 2-5 with punctures slightly sparser, separated mostly by two puncture widths or slightly more; surfaces shinier, shagreening finer. Sterna 2-5 with apical areas impunctate, basal areas sparsely punctate; surfaces shiny, extremely finely shagreened. Sternum 6 without median sulcus; apical margin broadly and gently concave, not deeply emarginate, not reflexed.

Terminalia as figured (Figs. 41-45); note the following: gonocoxite with median dorsal lobe long, blunt; sternum 7 as in subtilis; sternum 8 not capitate apically, apical part not set off from basal part and with short stout hairs medially.

VESTITURE. — Generally as in female but without pollen-collecting hairs and usually slightly paler; clypeus without well-formed beard but with long plumose hairs along apical margin hiding margin.
