Andrena washingtoni is a small western species closely related to A. topazana; The female of washingtoni can be separated from that of topazana by a slightly more punctate clypeus and the darker vestiture of the head, the thoracic pleurae, terga 2-4 and sterna 2-5; The male of washingtoni can be told from that of topazana only with difficulty and some misdetermination must necessarily result; The male of washingtoni generally has more dark vestiture on the face and, especially, on metasomal terga 2-5 than does the male of topazana.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-10 mm; width, 2-3 mm; wing length, M = 3.63 ± 0.147 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.99 ± 0.005; FOVL/ FOVW, M = 3.29 ± 0.032.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in topazana but mandible usually with less than apical half rufescent and wing veins usually dark brown with reddish-brown pterostigma.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals first three flagellar segments or slightly more; flagellar segment 1 about as long as segments 2 plus 3 or slightly shorter; segment 2 about as long as 3 and about as broad as long; median segments slightly longer than broad; Eyes about four times as long as broad, inner margins parallel; Mandible, malar space and galea as in topazana; Maxillary palpus as in topazana but segmental ratio about as 0.9:1.0:0.9:0.8:0.8:0.8; Labial palpus as in topazana but ratio about as 1.0:0.6:0.6:0.6; Labrum and labral process as in topazana; Clypeus as in topazana but punctures in medial half often slightly more crowded (but not as in birtwelli); Supraclypeal area, face above antennal fossae, genal area, facial fovea and vertex as in topazana.

Pronotum as in birtwelli; Mesoscutum sculptured as in birtwelli, punctures moderately obscured by tessellation but distinct; Scutellum often moderately shiny, punctures distinct posteriorly; Propodeum and mesepisternum as in topazana; Midbasitarsus and hind tibia as in topazana.

Metasomal terga 1-4 and sterna 2-5 sculptured as in topazana; Pygidial plate as in birtwelli.

VESTITURE. — Generally form and distribution of hairs as in topazana; Color of vestiture as in topazana except as follows: head hairs usually entirely dark brown or mostly so; thoracic pleural hairs dark brown to mostly so; propodeal hairs dark laterally and posteriorly in darkest specimens to entirely pale ochraceous; tergum 2 with at least apical one-third to half with dark brown hairs; terga 3-5 with dark brown hairs; sterna 2-5 with dark brown hairs; fore and middle legs with hairs dark brown except femora pale ochraceous and brown on outer surfaces tibiae; hind tibia and tarsus dark as in topazana.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 7-9 mm; width 1.5-2.0 mm; wing length, 2.96 ± 0.201 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.00 ± 0.008; FS1/FS2, M = 0.92 ± 0.019.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — As in topazana.

STRUCTURE. — Head form and structure as in topazana but clypeal punctures often slightly more dense; Thoracic form and sculpture as in topazana but mesoscutal punctures often slightly more distinct; Metasomal sculpture and form as in topazana.

Terminalia as in figures 52-56.

VESTITURE. — Generally as in topazana but face with more abundant dark brown hairs and terga 3-5 and apical half of tergum 2 with hairs dark brown or largely so; sterna 2-5 often with brown hairs at least basally.
