Dorsal spines and rays I+I+I/11-13; anal rays 6-8; pectoral rays 9-11 (usually 10); "fish-pole" about equal in length to second dorsal spine; second dorsal spine straight, conical and free, not connected to head by membrane; "lure" a tiny lobed appendage, scarcely differentiated from pole; 3rd spine large, immovable, in a large, pointed hump.
Yellowish to pinkish red with dark brown to blackish reticulations and marbling; sometimes almost entirely creamy yellow.
Maximum length, 9.5 cm.
Habitat: rocky bottoms.
Usually found in 1-15 m, but ranging to at least 40 m.
The central Gulf of California to Ecuador; all the offshore islands.
