Overview
Main identification features
  • front nostril: flap wide, branched
  • brown + mesh of red and blue lines and spots
  • top jaw no canines
Dorsal rays 6-7; anal rays 5-7; pectoral rays 20-22; front nostril with wide, branded flap; upper jaw with incisor-like teeth only, no canines; lower jaw with 4-6 pairs of incisors at front followed on each side by 2-4 canines; a conspicuous fleshy pad on pectoral fin base with free posterior margin; length of disc 2.7-2.9 in standard length; postdorsal- caudal distance 0.7-0.9 in length of dorsal fin; 5-8 rows of flattened papillae across front of sucker disc, 7-9 rows across rear of disc, 5-7 longitudinal rows along each central patch.

Brownish with reticulum of blue and red lines and spots on back and sides; also scattered small white spots evident, these sometimes forming 4-5 bars across dorsal surface.

Size: reaches about 6 cm.

Inhabits rocky shallows.

Depth: 0-10 m.

El Salvador to Ecuador and Cocos and Malpelo.
