Head cylindrical, body compressed posteriorly; tail (tail tip to anus) relatively short, only slightly longer than head and body (snout tip to anus), with blunt, stiff tail fin; snout conical, slightly projecting, length ~ large eye; jaws with low fleshy flanges; teeth pointed, in villiform bands in jaws; front roof of mouth with triangular patch of teeth with long posterior projection; dorsal and anal fins well developed; dorsal fin origin above level of gill opening; pectoral fins long and narrow, about 2.8-3.1 in head length, origin above gill opening.
Overall tan or very pale brown.
Size: to at least 27 cm.
Inhabits flat sandy bottoms.
Depth: 1-53 m.
Southern Baja and the Central Gulf of California to Ecuador, plus the Galapagos and Cocos.
