Overview
Main identification features
  • head flattened, cheeks puffy
  • brown + thin white bars
  • c: rounded
  • pectoral base - black and white bars
Dorsal rays VII + I, 11-12; anal rays I, 9-12; pectoral rays 17-20 (rarely 16); pelvic disc present; scales absent; tongue divided at front; head flattened, with puffy cheeks, without barbels; preopercle with a barbel; tail rounded.

Brown with 6-7 white bars, these sometimes incomplete or posterior 1-4 bars weak or missing; a narrow white bar at pectoral fin base followed by a dark brown bar; fins dusky brown to whitish.

Size: attains 6.5 cm.

Habitat: a secretive species that inhabits rocky crevices in tide pools and under cobble in shallow water.

Depth: to at least 15 m.

Endemic to Gulf of California.
