Greyish brown on dorsal half of head and body, with numerous white spots; whitish on operculum and lower half of body; fins dusky to blackish, tail fin with white stripes. Size: grows to about 52 cm. Inhabits sandy bottoms. Depth: 15-385 m. Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed. Climate Zone: North Temperate (Californian Province &/or Northern Gulf of California); Northern Subtropical (Cortez Province + Sinaloan Gap); Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos); Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo); South Temperate (Peruvian Province ).
