Dorsal rays III-V + 7-9, first dorsal behind origin of anal fin; anal rays I,21-25 all of fin base scaled; midlateral scales 43-47; abdomen rounded in cross section, not compressed into a keel; scales of body with ruffled edges; pectoral fins longer than head, reaching well past base of pelvic fins, frequently near their tips.

Dull greenish or olive on back, sides silvery white with well pronounced silver midlateral stripe.

Size: grows to 16 cm.

Habitat: commonly forms aggregations in shallow bays and on coastal reefs.

El Salvador to Colombia.
