Overview
Main identification features
  • rear extension of scaly corselet wide
  • back: patch of lines not reaching under 1st dorsal fin or over pectoral
Two well separated dorsal fins, the first with X-XI tall spines; second dorsal fin followed by 8 finlets; pectoral fins short, not reaching a vertical line from anterior margin of scaleless area on back; anal fin followed by 7 finlets; body scaleless except for the well developed scaly corselet at front, rear extension of corslet is wide.

Back dark bluish; patched 15 or more fairly broad, nearly vertical dark bars in scaleless area above lateral line behind 1st dorsal and pectoral fins, belly white.

Maximum size, 55 cm.

Inhabits coastal and oceanic waters, forming large schools.

Depth: 0-200 m.

Worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas; the subspecies A. rochei eudorax is restricted to the eastern Pacfic; from California to the mouth of the Gulf of California to Peru and Galapagos, Cocos and Malpelo.
