Dorsal rays III + XIII + 9, segmented rays unbranched except last ray may be branched at base; anal rays II, 18; pectoral rays 16-17; pelvic rays I, 2; lateral line gradually descending from upper edge of gill cover to midlateral axis; lateral line with 21-26 tubed scales followed by 8-12 notched scales; scales above lateral line about twice as wide as long; total scales in longitudinal series 33-35; a small pointed cirrus on upper edge of eye; scales absent on head, breast, belly, and base of pectoral fins.
Female greyish, with orange lines on head and 3 irregular orange bars on body; Male: head reddish, side with 3 broad dark brown bars with narrow whitish spaces between them; a black band around base of tail; caudal fin frequently black with pale base.
Size: reaches about 3.5 cm.
Inhabits shallow rocky areas.
Depth: 1-35 m.
Isla del Coco.
