Overview
Main identification features
  • no eye cirrus
  • body and tail base: 5 oblique black bars
  • tail fin blackish
Dorsal rays III + XII-XIII + 10-11, segmented rays unbranched; anal rays II, 18; pectoral rays 15; pelvic rays I, 2; lateral line gradually descending from upper edge of gill cover to midlateral axis; lateral line with 15 or 16 tubed scales followed on row below by 18 or 19 notched scales; scales above lateral line ~as long as wide; total scales in longitudinal series 36; eye cirrus absent; scales absent on head, breast, belly, and base of pectoral fins.

Green to brownish on back, whitish below; five oblique brown to blackish bars on side including black band on tail base; tail fin blackish.

Size: to 4.8 cm.


Habitat: common in the rocky intertidal zone.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Western and NE Gulf of California.
