Main identification features

Dorsal rays XII, 10-12; anal rays II, 11-12; pectoral rays 20-21; lateral-line scales 27-31; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 25-27; greatest body depth 3.3-4.0 in standard length.

Steel blue to olive on upper portion and paler below with orange hue on throat.

Size: reaches 17 cm.

Habitat: in open waters around rocky reefs.

Depth: 5-30 m?.

Southern California to Alijos Rocks (about 240 km off Baja California), Guadalupe Island, and the Revillagigedo Islands.
