Dorsal rays I,7; anal rays 27-32; pectoral rays I,13; gill rakers on first arch 1-2 + 3-4; none on rear face of first two arches; body moderately robust; lips thin; only two pairs of barbels; upper barbel broad, ribbon-like, reaching to middle part of anal fin; head shield mostly smooth; palate teeth in four patches, but fused to form continuous band, except patches may be separate in young; pectoral spine with long flattened filament reaching to end of anal fin; dorsal spine with very elongate filament; lateral line deflected upwards at tail base.
Steel blue to nearly black on back, silvery white with a pink cast on sides and white on belly; fins generally pale.
Maximum size, 70 cm.
Habitat: common in coastal seas and estuaries.
Depth: 0-20 m.
Gulf of California to northern Peru.
