  • preopercle - 2 strong spines

Dorsal rays X+I, 21-23; anal rays II,8; pored lateral-line scales 46-49; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 14-16, total 22-24; snout overhangs horizonal mouth; no canines in lower jaw; 5 mental pores on chin, no barbel; preopercular margin with 8-12 fine spines and two sharp spines at angle, the lowermost directed downwards or slightly forward; second anal spine very strong, longer than base of anal fin but not reaching tail fin; tail fin slightly rounded; scales rough, except smooth around eyes and on fins.

Color mainly silvery with fins (especially pectoral and pelvic fins) slightly yellowish; faint wavy stripes or dots sometimes apparent along horizontal scale rows of body.

Size: reaches maximum length of about 30 cm.

Inhabits inshore shallows, entering estuaries and coastal rivers.

Depth: 1-20 m.

SW and central-eastern Gulf of California to Colombia.
