Dorsal rays X + I or II, 25-29; anal rays II, 8; pored lateral- line scales 49-54; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 15-18, total 25-27; mouth terminal, oblique; no canines in lower jaw; snout blunt, slightly greater than eye diameter; chin with 5 pores, no barbel; preopercular margin with 8-9 spines, including 2-4 strong spines at angle, the lowermost directed downwards and forward; second anal spine about as long as first soft anal ray, not reaching tail fin; tail fin straight; scales rough, except smooth around eyes and on fins.

Color silvery with yellowish to clear fins; a dark spot at base of pectoral fins; upper lip and tip of lower jaw dusky.

Size: to 30 cm.

Inhabits inshore areas, including estuaries and river mouths; feeds on crustacean larvae, shrimps and fishes.

Depth: 1-20 m?.

Central Baja and the Gulf of California to Chiapas, Mexico.
