Click on images to enlarge. © Copyright Gerald Allen, 2006 · 0 Balistes polylepis © Copyright Photographer/SFTEP, 2002 · 0 Balistes polylepis 3 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features uniform olive to blue-grey tail fin concave Dorsal rays III + 26-28; anal rays 24-26; pectoral rays 13- 15; teeth in jaws deeply notched; anterior rays of second dorsal and anal fins much longer than posterior rays; tail base without spines of ridges; cheeks without grooves; caudal fin concave or doubly concave, with prolonged lobes; scales very small; snout scaly; group of large bony scales behind operculum. Olive brown to pale blue grey; no distinguishing marks on body or fins. Size: attains a length of 80 cm. Inhabits rocky reefs, often seen over adjacent sand or rubble areas; sometimes found in aggregations. Depth: 3-512 m. Northern California to the Gulf of California to Chile and all the offshore islands. Also occurs in Hawaii, where it may be establishing a population, and seen in the Marquesas Islands in 1999. Diet: sessile worms; sessile crustacea; sessile molluscs; mobile benthic gastropods/bivalves; sea-stars/cucumbers/urchins; mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs); mobile benthic worms; sponges/seasquirts/bryozoa; bony fishes; sessile worms. Eastern Pacific Range: Northern limit=40; Southern limit=-20; Western limit=-124; Eastern limit=-70; Latitudinal range=60; Longitudinal range=54. Egg Type: Benthic; Pelagic larva.
