Overview
Main identification features
  • 1st dorsal fin : dark spot rear base, spines short
  • 2nd dorsal fin - 2 rows orange spots
  • c: all fin dark, no dark blotch
  • top lip: no black line
  • pelvic and a: black
Dorsal rays VII + I, 13-14, spines short; anal rays I, 12-13; pectoral rays 21-23; scales large, 25-28 midlateral scales and 8 predorsal scales (extending forward to eyes); large scales also present on cheek and upper half of opercle; pelvic disc present.

Generally pale tan or whitish, sometimes with faint yellowish- brown bars on side; lower edge of opercular membrane and isthmus dark brown; top lip without black line: a black spot at rear of base of 1st dorsal fin; a diffuse brown spot at middle of caudal fin base; ovate orange spots on dorsal fin and uppermost part of caudal fin; pelvic and anal fins blackish.

Maximum size, 13 cm.

Inhabits sand or mud bottoms, commonly caught by trawlers in Panama Bay

Depth: 10-120 m.

Costa Rica to Peru.
