Main identification features
  • 1st dorsal fin : faint dark blotch at base, spines long

Head compressed, elongate (27-32% of SL); eye large, 8-10% of standard length; mouth long, oblique; body relatively slender (greatest depth 18-22% of standard length); VII dorsal fin spines, slightly filamentous, longest (5th) reaching 4th-5th ray; 13 (rarely 14) dorsal rays; 14 (13-15) anal rays; last rays of dorsal & anal reach base of tail fin; pectoral 24-26 rays, reaches beyond origin of anal fin; pelvic fins reach anus; tail base slender (least depth 8-9.5% of standard length, < eye diameter) tail pointed, long, ~1/2 standard length; scales large, rough, 7-9 before dorsal fin, 5-6 on pectoral base; 1-2 medium scales on upper 1/2 of opercle, several on upper 1/2 & 1-2 small ones on lower half of preopercle.

Color (preserved fish): Body brownish, with 3-6 dusky vertical bars on side; 1st dorsal with a large black spot on last ½ of its base; with or without faint spot on tail base; snout dusky, prominent black line on top lip; lower gill membranes, pelvics, soft dorsal & anal fins dusky.

Size: 13 cm

Habitat: benthic on soft bottoms.

Depth: 90-255 m.

SW Gulf of California; and Costa Rica and the Galapagos.
