Body relatively slender (greatest depth 17-22.5% of standard length); head compressed long (25-33% of SL); eye 7-9% of standard length; mouth large, oblique; dorsal fin VII spines, spines very elongate, filamentous, often reaching tail fin base, 1st & 2nd spines longest in female, 5th longest in male 14 (13-15) dorsal rays; 14 (13-15) anal rays; last rays of dorsal & anal reach base of tail fin; pectoral 23-25 rays, reaches to anus; pelvic fins reach anus; tail pointed, relatively short, ~30% of standard length; tail stalk slender18-10.5% of standard length; scales large, rough, 7-9 before dorsal fin, 1 large + 4-5 small on pectoral base; no scales on lower cheek, upper third of opercle covered with large scales.

Body brownish, with orange spots; orange lines on head; a median row of 5-6 short double dark bars from behind head to tail fin base; 1st dorsal with a black spot at the center rear; 2nd dorsal with 2 rows of orange spots, separated by an orange stripe; no black band on upper lip; anal fin dusky, with orange spots; tail fin with orange spots, a black spot at its base; pelvic dark.

Size: 5.7 cm.

Habitat: benthic on soft bottoms.

Depth: 15-80 m.

Southern Gulf of California to central Mexico; Costa Rica to Ecuador.
