Body relatively slender; head large (>1/4 of standard length); eye large (8-11% of standard length); least depth of tail base 7.3-9.9% of standard length, < eye diameter; pectoral 22-25 rays, reaching to origin of anal fin; pelvics reaching nearly to anus; tail long, pointed (1/2 standard length); last rays of soft dorsal and anal reach base of tail fin; VII dorsal spines, moderately long, filamentous, 5th longest, reaching to 6th or 7th dorsal ray; second dorsal 13 rays; tail pointed, long (~2 standard length); scales large, rough, 27-28 lateral rows, 7-8 scales before dorsal fin, 6-8 medium scales on base of pectoral, 1 large + several small scales on upper opercle, several medium sized on upper preopercle, several small scales on lower preopercle.
Grey-brown; head and body with a few orange spots; a prominent black line on top lip; no spot on first dorsal fin; second dorsal dusky, with 2 rows of orange spots; tail fin with a large dark spot covering its base, upper half with orange spots, an orange stripe on lower half; anal fin blackish, with an inner orange stripe; pelvics blackish.
Size: to 12 cm.
Habitat: muddy bottoms.
Depth: 20-150 m.
N and E Gulf of California to Ecuador.
