Overview
Main identification features
  • 1st dorsal fin : large dark blotch at base, spines medium
  • tail fin base: indistinct dark spot
  • top lip: black line
  • flank: 6-8 bars
Head long (>1/4 of standard length); eye (7-9.5% of standard length); tail base slender (least depth >eye diameter and 9-11% of standard length) mouth large oblique (45 degrees), 12 spines on 1st gill arch; dorsal fin VII spines, with slightly filamentous spines, longest spine (5th) reaching base of 4th-5th soft ray, 12-13 soft rays; 14 (occasionally 13 or 15) anal rays; last rays of dorsal and anal reach base of tail fin; pectoral 23-25 rays, reaching past origin of anal fin; tail pointed, moderate length (>30% of standard length) scales large, rough, 26-28 lateral rows. 7-9 before dorsal fin, 1-2 large + 1-2 small scales on upper 2 of opercle, 6-8 medium sized scales on base of pectoral fin, several medium sized scales on upper 2 of preopercle & 1-2 large + several small scales on lower half.

Color (Preserved fish): Body brownish, with 6-8 faint dark bars, first dorsal fin with large black blotch at rear half of base; upper lip with black marginal band; base of tail fin covered with faint dark spot; pelvics, anal, soft dorsal and tail fins dusky.

Size: 13 cm.

Habitat: benthic on soft bottoms.

Depth: 60-100 m.

SW and eastern Gulf of California to central Mexico; Costa Rica to Colombia, the Galapagos Islands.
