Head and body compressed, an elongate oval tapering to slender tail base; snout short, bluntly rounded; mouth at front, strongly oblique; between eyes strongly rounded; head profile convex; 17-20 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal originates over pectoral, low with small lobe at front; anal low, with small front lobe; tail deeply concave; pectoral low on body, long, reaches to ~middle of anal fin; pelvics small, inserted under rear of pectoral base; scales small, cover body, nape, cheeks, operculum, and top jaw; dorsal & anal fins scaly; body relatively shallow (depth 43-50% of standard length); dorsal 33-36 (usually 35) rays; anal 27-30 (usually 28) rays; pectoral 21-23 (usually 22) rays; 65-75 lateral scales.

Black to dark grey, with silvery and blue reflections; snout and jaws black; pectorals and tail dark with pale margins; dorsal, anal and pelvics with black margins.

Size: 61 cm.

Habitat: oceanic pelagic, near surface.

Depth: 0-620 m.

A temperate north and south Pacific species; in the eastern Pacific it is known from between Washington State in the US to off central Baja and from Ecuador to Chile, plus off the Galapagos.
