BREGMACEROS
CODLETS
Small; elongate body; mouth at front; a single long dorsal fin ray on head, well separated from rest of fin, central part of dorsal fin with very short rays; anal fin similar to main part of dorsal fin; pectorals short, high on sides; pelvic fins on throat under operculum, 5-7 rays, inner 3-4 rays branched and short, outer 3 rays free, very long, fit into groove along abdomen and side of anal fin; top half of eye with transparent membrane; scales thin, small, smooth; lateral line a large tube on each side of dorsal midline; jaws with 1-2 series of minute, slender, movable teeth.
A circumtropical genus with 11 species; in the tropical eastern Pacific three (perhaps five) species occur, with one endemic species found inshore and treated here.
