Overview
Main identification features Small; elongate body; mouth at front; a single long dorsal fin ray on head, well separated from rest of fin, central part of dorsal fin with very short rays, I, 44-49 rays; anal fin similar to main part of dorsal fin, 44-50 rays; pectorals short, high on sides, 17-19 rays; pelvic fins on throat under operculum, 5-7 rays, inner 3-4 rays branched and short, outer 3 rays free, very long, fit into groove along abdomen and side of anal fin; top half of eye with transparent membrane; scales thin, small, smooth, 56-62 on lateral line, 10-11 in transverse series (below front of main part of dorsal fin); lateral line a large tube on each side of dorsal midline; jaws with 1-2 series of minute, slender, movable teeth, similar teeth at front of roof of mouth, no teeth on sides of roof of mouth.

Upper head and body brownish grey, lower part silvery white; fins whitish to translucid; eye blackish.

Size: 10 cm.

Habitat: over soft bottoms on continental shelf and slope.

Depth: 0-1246 m.

Southern Baja and the lower 2/3 of the Gulf of California to Peru, the Revillagigedos Islands.
