Body cylindrical, a little depressed; head compressed; eye small, elliptical, lateral; round fleshy snout, projecting a little beyond mouth; front nostril a stiff tube over top lip, rear nostril circular, a slightly raised rim; head with prominent papillae and raised flaps, especially on snout and lower head, and tip of top lip; 1row small papillae along side of belly; operculum with 1 flat spine; lower edge of preopercle with curved forward pointing spine; tail compressed; tail fin elongate, 8-10 rays, not contiguous with dorsal and anal fins; male with bilobed fleshy pad and penis immediately behind anus; anal 46-50 (usually 48-49) rays; dorsal 65-70 (usually 67-68) rays; pectoral fin a narrow ovoid, with an elongate stalk, with 15-19 (usually 17) rays; pelvics a pair of slender threads, inserted under operculum; body scaly - 75-80 in lateral series; scales on head except snout, around eyes and under mouth.

Yellow-brown to pale brown; dorsal and anal fins with brown band along bases and yellow outer sections; sometimes a faint dark stripe through eye and another from eye angled down across operculum; rows of papillae on sides of belly white; sometimes an indistinct dark spot at tail base.

Size: 6 cm.

Habitat: rocky shores.

Depth: 1-25 m.

Endemic to the Galapagos Islands.
