Overview
Main identification features
  • body: cream, many small dark spots
  • d: large, white margin
  • tail ~1/2 total length
Tail tip a hard finless point; dorsal and anal fins present; dorsal fin relatively well developed, originating well forward on head, slightly behind level of rear corner of mouth; pectoral fins absent; head and body laterally compressed; anterior nostrils tubular; a median groove on underside of snout; gill openings low and lateral, converging forward; teeth of jaws small and pointed, in single rows; tail nearly equal to head and trunk.

Head creamy white, body yellowish, covered with numerous fine spots, not much larger than eye diameter; dorsal fin with a distinct white edge.

Size: to 46 cm.

Habitat: sandy and rocky bottoms.

Depth: 0-30 m.

The tip of Baja and central Mexico to Panama.
