Main identification features
  • snout pointed, overhanging, grooved below
  • d: high, origin on nape
  • tail: less than 40 percent total length tip a hard finless point
  • gill openings underneath
  • pectorals absent
CALLECHELYS

RIDGEFIN EELS

Head and body compressed; snout pointed, a median groove on its underside, slightly overhanging mouth; tip of tail a hard finless point; pectorals absent; dorsal and anal fins present; dorsal begins on head at or just behind eye, and ends a little before tail tip; anterior nostril tubular; teeth small, pointed, in 1 row on jaws; gill openings low on side, converging forwards; gill chamber an expanded pouch; lateral line from head almost to tip of tail.

A circumtropical to subtropical genus with 14 species; in our region there are 3 endemics.
