Overview
Main identification features
  • moderately deep body; steep head
  • anal fin and lower c: yellow
  • black patch: border operculum
  • pectoral: dark blotch
Moderately deep body; dorsal rays VIII+I,19-21; anal rays II+I,16-17; gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 3-6 + 15-17; breast naked except for a small median patch of scales in front of pelvic fins; lateral line with a pronounced, moderately long anterior arch; 35-42 strong scutes.

Greenish blue or bluish black on back, silvery white to yellowish or golden on lower side; black spot on gill cover; pectoral base with a black spot and yellowish tail and anal fins.

Size: attains 100 cm; 17.7kg.

Habitat: common in estuaries.

Depth: 3-350 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru, and the Galapagos, Cocos and Malpelo.
