CARANX

JACKS, CREVALLES, TREVALLIES, POMPANOS

Body moderately compressed in adults; straight rear part (but not curved front part) of lateral line with scutes (large, hard spiny scales); pectoral fins longer than head; dorsal and anal fins not followed by finlets; jaws with teeth, those on top jaw in an outer series of canines and an inner band of fine teeth, lower jaw with one row of teeth; margin of body at rear of gill chamber without papillae.

A circumtropical genus of perhaps 19 species. Our region contains 5 species, including 1 circumtropical species, 2 Indo-Pacific species and 2 endemics.
