Overview
Main identification features
  • head: central groove - 2 parts;eye small
  • pectoral spine - finely serrated
  • palate - teeth patches touching
  • jaw teeth bands wide
  • gill opening at side
Dorsal rays I,7; anal rays 19-23; pectoral rays I,10-11; gill rakers on first arch 5-7 + 10-12; rakers present on posterior surface of all gill arches; body moderately robust; lips fleshy, but not thick; groove on top of head discontinuous - a short groove on snout, another posteriorly; eye small (3.0-4.0 in fleshy space between eyes); gill opening restricted, gill membranes forming low fold across throat or joined to it in center; jaws wide, wth large teeth; teeth at front of top jaw in a continuous broad band; palate teeth large and conical, in two large oval patches that touch or nearly do, more oblique than horizontal; pectoral spine finely serrated.

Dark blue or brownish on back, silvery white on sides and belly; fins dusky.

Size: grows to at least 35 cm.

Inhabits brackish estuaries and fresh water.

Depth: 0-20 m.

Eastern Gulf of California to northern Peru.
